Guitar Rig is an amp and effects modeling software package developed by Native Instruments. The software can function either as a standalone application, or as a plug-in for other software. It was originally released in 2004.

Overview

The Guitar Rig environment is a modular system, providing capabilities for multiple amplifiers, effects pedals and rack mountedhardware. Primarily designed for electric guitar and bass, the software uses amplifier modeling to allow real-timedigital signal processing in both standalone and DAW environments via plug-in (VST/DXi/RTAS/AU).[1][2] The software simulates a number of devices such as preamplifiers, cabinets and microphones under pseudonyms (such as renaming the Shure SM57 as the 'Dynamic 57').

The system allows customisation of module parameters – either through manipulation of the graphical interface, use of a MIDI controller or employment of the RigKontrol foot control pedal. Settings can be saved as presets and exported and shared with other users. Version 3 included a redesigned interface to allow improved preset categorisation and customised interfaces for 'live' use.[3]

Rig Kontrol

The Rig Kontrol is a foot-operated USB and MIDI controller. It contains an audio interface and DI box,[4] allowing integration with live sound environments.

The device can operate Guitar Rig using eight switches and an expression pedal. Earlier versions of the device contained only six switches and an expression pedal, and did not support interfacing functionality.[5]

History

Versions 1-2 (2004-2006)

Starman tesla live. Guitar Rig was first released on both macOS & Windows in September 2004. At this time, it was a hardware/software hybrid system, with the Rig Kontrol hardware preamp and foot controller feeding into the software. The software featured a drag-and-drop interface and a selection of 3 tube amplifier emulations (some with multiple preamp variations).[1][6]

Version 2 of the software, released in February 2006, added a number of additional amp options (including the software's first bass amps), added a new looping feature, and expanded the Rig Kontrol hardware.[7]

Versions 3-5 (2007-2019)

Guitar Rig 3, released in December 2007, included the option to purchase the software independently of the hardware. The updated software also featured a streamlined view dedicated to live performances.[4][8] Before version 3 was released, the graphical user interface simulated amplifier logos and design construction; however, version 3, this was replaced with a generic name.[8]

Released in October 2009, Guitar Rig version 4 introduced improved cabinet and microphone modeling software, alongside the 'Control Room' feature, which allowed for greater customisation of preamp, cabinet and microphone combinations.[9][2]

Announced in August 2011 and released in September 2011, version 5 of the software included an expanded version of the Control Room feature, and introduced the ability to perform sidechaining within the software.[10][11]

Version 6 (2020-present)

Version 6 of Guitar Rig, announced in September 2020 and released on October 1, 2020, was the first major update for the software since 2011. This new version included a redesigned user interface, 'Intelligent Circuit Modelling' (an amp reproduction system based on machine learning), 3 new amp options (including 1 new bass amp), and additional effects.[12][13]

Use Rig Kontrol 3 with today's recording software and operating systems

You can often find older, 'unsupported' gear for cheap—yet itworks just fine with today's computers. Native Instruments RigKontrol 3 is a cool foot controller with 8 footswitches, a pedal, andan ASIO audio interface that you can often pick up in the $125 – $150price range on places like reverb.com. Here's how to get it workingwith the 64-bit version of Windows 10 (I believe it also works withthe 32-bit version, but haven't tested it.

DOWNLOAD AND INSTALL THE SOFTWARE

1. First of all, don't plug the RK3 into a USB port until you've installed the Native Instruments driver! Windows will think it needs to install a driver, and the one it installs won't work properly. If you make this mistake, keep the pedal plugged in, open Device Manager, scroll down to Universal Serial Bus devices, right-click on Rig Kontrol 3, and choose uninstall. Restart the computer but immediately after the computer begins to restart, unplug Rig Kontrol 3 so you can start over.

2. Go to Native Instruments' Drivers and Other Files support section. Download the most recent (and last) Rig Kontrol 3 driver, version, 3.1.0. Although there's no mention of supporting Windows 10, it does.

3. Also download Controller Editor version 1.7.4, the last version to support Rig Kontrol 3. If you have a newer Controller Editor in your computer, installing 1.7.4 will overwrite it. So, rename the current Controller Editor folder (e.g., Controller Editor 2.6) and to be safe, also rename the Controller Editor.exe file in the folder.

4. Don't plug in RK3 yet. Install the driver and then Controller Editor 1.7.4. In your Start menu, you'll see Rig Kontrol 3 under Native Instruments. This is where you choose the audio settings.

2. Connect the RK3 to USB. Jupyter notebook cheat sheet. It's best to have a direct connection to your computer's motherboard—no hub, and no USB extension cord.

3. After a few seconds, the Controller Editor application should recognize RK3. Once the Connect button is outlined in orange, click on it. The RK3 LED display should show con.

4. Click on the Assign tab, then click on a footswitch you want to assign. Here you can assign the footswitches as desired, and not just to controllers—there are options for program changes, start, stop, etc. Cool stuff!

5. You also need to calibrate the footpedal, or it won't work. Garage sale stuff. Choose File > Preferences, and click on the Controller tab. Click on Recalibrate and move the pedal up and down a few times. If you have other expression pedals connected, move them up and down as well.

Done! Now you have a functioning Rig Kontrol 3 to use with your DAW of choice. If later on it seems the RK3 isn't connecting to your system, open Controller Editor 1.7.4, choose Rig Kontrol 3 (it's under the Komplete file tree), click Connect, and all should be well.

If this doesn't work for you, don't give up! The Gods of USB can be fickle, and you may need to find an optimum order for using RK3. What works for me is booting the computer without RK3 plugged in, opening the Controller Editor, plugging in RK3, then clicking on the Controller Editor's Connect button.
